Cloud Computing is quite the buzz word these days. Everyone is talking about the cloud, but when push comes to shove, many people don’t really know what it means. The cloud is not a new concept. In some ways, it is older than computing as we know it. In the article “What Cloud is Right For Your Firm“, I have written about the various options and what they mean. This article was published by the Law Firm Consultants Network of Chicago (www.lawfirmconsultantsnetwork.com) — a group of professionals who service law firms in the Chicago area.

Law Firms today are in the process of evaluating their IT infrastructure, and how they can avoid purchasing and maintaining their own hardware. One solution is a hosted office; another is subscription based products that are stored and managed by the software vendor. TSR Consulting Services, Inc. endorses Flywire Technology (www.flywiretechnology.com) as the vendor of choice for the entire firm. Not only is the data secure and backed up, but you choose the software that works best for your firm.

Do your research and if you would like some assistance, we are here to help you.

This is a true story.

A few weeks ago, I sent out an invitation to other consultants, asking if they would be interested in a presentation of hosted services offered by Flywire Technology. I was careful to select people I knew, and who might be interested in exploring this cool new offering. I sent the email, and waited for responses from my friends and colleagues.

To my surprise, I received a reply from a client! She went on to tell me that she was very interested in a demonstration. Their server and recently failed, backups were out of date, and the amount of production time lost in the law firm was over one week. All I could think of was “Oops–wrong person.” The email address of the consultant was similar to that of the client, so I guess good old Outlook picked up the wrong contact, and I didn’t catch it.

I called the client and explained the mistake, and also told her about the product (by this time I was obligated to explain). I also described (enthusiastically, I might add) another service offered by Flywire Technology called Managed Backup Services. The client was amazed. She had never heard of this concept. If only I had contacted her two weeks earlier! Down time would have been reduced to a few hours!

Are you wondering what managed backup is? How does it work? Why subscribe to managed backup when on-line services are cheaper? Bottom line: Managed backup relinquishes you of the responsibility of knowing what and when to back up data. Did you know that your email messages may not be backed up nightly with our existing backup? What about any SQL databases that you might have? These also require something “special.” And, if you lose your data, how will you get it back, and how long will it take? Answers to these questions are what, in my opinion, will let you sleep at night.

Managed backup in Flywire’s environment covers the following:

You tell Flywire what programs you use, they will make sure that the data is securely backed up on site (portable drive) AND off site in 2 separate locations;

Flywire will ask you for a list of applications, install codes and serial numbers. Why? That way, if your server or hard drive has a problem, within a few hours your programs and data will be accessible. Your down-time will be reduced to a few hours, at the most.

Why am I telling you this? Because this one small accidental email has resulted in an entire firm resting easy that their data and programs are safe. I didn’t send YOU the email accidentally, but I feel it is important to spread the word. And the best part of all… the service is less than what you spend at Starbucks in a month!

Would you like more details? Did I pique your interest? Please let me know… I would love to share more about this fantastic company and how they bend over backwards to service customers.

Hope you sleep well tonight. And if data loss is keeping you up, call me in the morning.
